Our current project

Harald Haßlacher, Teacher at the federal music school in Tyrol, Austria, currently spends several months voluntarily in the school center “Shree Sampada Secondary School" in Naya Basti, a small village approx.100 km east of Kathmandu to give instrumental lessons, teach basic music and trying to improve their creativity by drawing, painting and creating handcrafts.

Many percussion instruments, flutes, sheet music and teaching material as well as a starter set from the publisher GANZ in der Musik® were already made available by the association (and sponsors). The lessons are taking place in the school center of “Shree Sampada Secondary School” in Naya Basti, but also many kids are coming from the nearby villages of Sildhunga, Barna, Jethal, Sikre, Attarpur even accepting a walking distance of 1,5 hours (one way!)

Until now 47 pupils between 8 and 16 years attended the music classes, in average 15 are coming regularly. Additional to the basic music there are 4 flute groups with in sum 17 pupils.

Currently there are extra trainings on performing a well known and traditional song “Resham firiri” for a parents evening including singing, flute playing, percussion and a dance performance. Before November 3rd more lessons were hold but now as the normal school year started pupils are attending once a week the basic music classes, two times a week flute lessons and once a week dancing classes.

As more shools are existing in this region there are visits planned to explain our intention and offer help. How this can be turned into reality is then also depending on your donation willingness. From our association only equipment is donated, which are handed over locally.

How we teach here in Nepal?

The age of the students is from 8 to 16 years. They are speaking in a different language, are dressed in another way but highly motivated to learn new items. In my first starting lessons several nepali teacher were supporting my lessons. Nowadays i can do it myself using a mixturelanguage of englishnepali.  I am working  to improve my nepali-speaking, but it takes time.

Above you see the daily "school starting celebration"

Anni Edenstrasser together with her brother Peter, Renate und Norbert were bringing along a huge bag with about 30 kgs carrying material for our association. They had made the "Manaslutrek" and afterwards we spent some time together in Kathmandu and visited the historical town Bhaktapur together.
On the whole trip they did not allow me to pay anything, further than that i got a donation to our association and a rucksack from them...i am struggling for words to discribe this situation but can say"Namaste"! It was amazing!

Repairing work

It took some hours to remake 9 seatbanks and 3 tables out of a lot of broken pieces - all handmade. And if you follow the pictures you see that a lot of students had been very helpful doing so. Further than that all  existing tables and seats have been fixed with about 600 srews to give them a longer life.

Update 19-12-14

Big shoppingday in Kathmandu. 2 big rucksacks, 2 big cartons and one bag, about 75 kgs had been brought along. Starting the tour i had place on the Riksha, later on it was only used for transporting  the stuff to the bus terminal.

Update 19-12-17

The drawing competition had been taken place in the "Shree Sampada Primary School" in Barna. The youngstudents in the 2 nursery-classes got a little squeak-doll each and some playing-blocks similar to "Lego".

"108 Sonnengrüße" for a good purpose

On the 21.12.2019 round 80 yogis were celebrating solstice with 108 "greetings of the sun". In the premises of the "Kulturquartier" they were sweating for a good purpose. The net profit of
€ 840,- was handed over to Nepal School Project as a donation. This amount should enable our association to purchase music instruments and learning materials for students

introducing a little more colours and brightness into their day to day learning.

Many thanks to all involved people for their support: TVB Kufstein (Stefan Pühringer), yoga.tage Kufstein (Katharina Martini), Kufstein Galerien (Sandra Bodner), Kulturquartier Kufstein, Bäckerei Mitterer, Neuner Tees, Gerald Pletzer, Florian Egger for the shooted pictures, Nana Belke for the coole sound und Martin Heis for the live-music.

BU: Monika Egger (Yogaraum Kufstein) and  Michael Aigner (Secretary of Nepal School Project Association), c) Florian Egger

Ps: Many thanks to Monika for this great idea. With her engagement she shows that many things are possible. 108 smiles in the face of happy students over here should give her power to continue her good work in the yoga-studio.

Update 19-12-25

In the kitchenroom of Mrs Didi Ganga 2 cartons were placed with drawing maps,  packages of colour pencils, wax colours, erasers and sharpeners and watercolours each. In any free time or breaking time they can use the stuff from there and draw a painting for the competition.

Update 19-12-27

Football championship for Secondary schools in the area. The dresses of our team were sponsered by "Nepal School Project, Kufstein/Austria". There was also one friendship footballgame, where we could watch "ladypower pur"!!

Update 20-01-06

Also here it's getting cold now but people know how to get on. Again a big buying-tour in Kathmandu, this time about 100 kg of stuff for the schools. The 4-7 hours busdrive back to Sildhunga is a challenge itself.
Sister Carmen was sending also two parcels with games, used clothingmaterial of her kids, sweets, special "Hüttenpatschen" for cold studentfeet, one lucky star and a motivation-picture for me drawn by my godchild Ludwig.

Update 20-01-21

Together with teachers and students we entered the jungle of Naya Basti to get wooden posts for constructing goals on the footballground nearby the school. The "kukuri" of Sanil Tamang was very helpful for this work. The posts had been fixed with aluminiumwire from a nearby place, where an overhead powerline had been changed.

Update 20-01-22

Gifts for the winners of the drawing-competition were handed over. A lot of smiling faces left this ceremony.

Update 19-01-27

I was starting this work alone but after a short time the boys of class 6 were helping and later on it developed to a project were Tobias with classes 6, 7 and 8 were joining and a big team could fix a fence on one side of the footballground, where the ball always was falling down the steep hill and disappearing anywhere in the jungle. Even all the ladies were offering there help on this hard work! We were also digging a small waterchannel to enable plants to grow and making a natural fence available.

Update 20-01-31

Mrs Sangeeta Bhandari and "didi Mary" were visiting the school. Mrs Dr. Weber-Keller was inaugurating the new installed computer lab, which was sponsored by "ukalo.de". Students can work now on 12 laptops and 8 normal computers, which is great and i think unique for this area. For the library many new books were sponsored. Further than that a wall was constructed together with many meters of waterdrainages. Their visit was celebrated as a school-festival. Also this time she brought along a big bag for our association containing schoolmaterials and donated clothing materials from Walter Kristler's family and my sister Carmen. Many thanks for doing so! Again we got those nice bags sponsored by Sparkasse Kufstein /Ebbs and there were also some specials delivered for my future mointain-tours. As you can see on the foto Robert's "Duxer Lärche", a special destillery created for hard woodworkers by Berghotel Hinterduxerhof, did not survive for a long time, approximately 4 hours. The same evening we enjoyed the drink together with some teachers and at the end their question "why don't you have more of this majestic drink...? Also some new Cappies have been brought along, thanks very much! On the video you can see and hear Tobias Taller. He also teached on the school (English, Science and Mathematics) as a volounteer and is doing well on the guitar and violin.

Update 20-02-04

On this day the "Semesterconcert" took place at the federal music-school of Kustein/Tirol/Austria. They had organized it as a "Benefit Concert" for our association. Many thanks to Mr. Bahram Pietsch (director of the school) and to Mr. Michael Aigner (clarinet-teacher and at the same time secretary of our association). Music is connecting people - this time Kufstein/Tirol/Austria with Sildhunga/Sindupalchowk District/Nepal. I am also sending my best greetings to them together with "Namaste" from Nepal! In total € 642,- were handed over to our association. To all visitors of these event, who were also donating the project i can say "you have done well!" All this money enables our association to give at least a little support to many students, which also makes me happy. Thanks so much!

Update 20-02-10

This day i was going down to the "Shree Sampada Primary School" in Barna to distribute clothes from Fam Kristler, but it ended up in a day with singing, practicing on the chime, doing paper-crafts and playing chess. The children were very happy about these gifts - thanks again to Walter & Renate, Steffi and Kathrin. On the picture you can see what child is wearing what (the teachers have taken the choice to handle it over to the most needy ones).
Together with lady-teachers and students we created some paper-crafts and played on different Orff-instruments. The lady-teachers for nursery- and lower classes will learn this instrument, 2 had been supported. It should be a good way to teach easy songs in english to lower classes. Tobias is doing well with his classes down there, they performed famous folk-songs "Leka ka hami", "Resham Firiri" and "Gau gau bata utha" - with what passion they were singing! Interested people could also try on the guitar (sponsored by ukalo.de). He had organised several chess-playing-sets and needed a box for the chess-figures. His idee: taking bambus, which grows here everywhere. So suggested and immediately done. All people (headteacher Sir Ashok Bhandari included) were helping to get some bamboo-sticks and cut them into the right length. In a short time about 18 boxes were ready. As clousing material an old plasticplane should be helpful to make wads to close these sticks on the open side.

Update 20-02-13/14

Chess-Competition and official good-bye ceremony for Tobias. He was training with classes in lower and upper classes and i think that some talents in this game had been found. 20 students took place in this competition ending with two final games (upper and lower) classes on friday, the 14. of February. The same morning the  official good-bye ceremony was held in Primary School. Thereafter the sponseres guitar from ukalo.de and 4 chess-sets were handed over to Mr Yug Bahadur Shrestha, headteacher of Shree Sampada Secondary School. He sponsored also some chess-sets to interested students. We all do hope that the responsible people take care of the games and the instrument enabling a lot of students to gain from them in future. Tobi is young and wants to see more from our world, so all the best to his further plans visiting a monastery, heading on to Tajikistan and...

I was in Kathmandu at the Neo-Clinic (sponsored by ukalo.de) and Sir Surya Shrestha took care of me. I had some problems with an Allergy on my hands and he handed me over the right medicine for it (many thanks also to Mr Dr Reiner Weber-Keller, he was contacting many friends in Germany to find out what desease it finally was following to some fotos i had transferred). Back to Sildhunga i was again on the way with my big rucksack full of schoolmaterials and 2 cartons with flutebooks, chimes, glue, more bags sponsored by Sparkasse Kufstein /Ebbs and clothingmaterial and dolls sponsored by Carmen, my sister and Walter Kristler's family! A lot of children will be happy receiving those items.

Some more instruments for the primary levels (orff) had been handed over. Update 20-03-16

Another 6 balls together together with some trainingsstuff for football was sponsored to Yug Sir, the responsible man to look after it will be Captain Sumann Tamang. An own fund had been established to honour teaching-lessons for flute with money. It was deposited at the school. Sir Amar Pandey will be responsible for it and pay out money for students or teachers, who are teaching other students on the flute. A contract with clear rules and instructions had been set up and contrasigned by both parties "Sampada Secondary School" and "nepal-school-project" and will be valid for one year.
I do hope that my "message" was understood and all involved people trying their best to a stady growing of music affairs in this area which also should be recognized in other regions of Nepal. At the moment we try to coach 2 students and 2 trachers intensively to enable continuous music lessons after my time beeing there. Sanil Tamang has started with one group and got his first "music teaching salary" on the 20. of March. His mother was joining this little ceremony and both were happy.

Further Projects

1. "Shree Bagh Bhairab Basic School", Gairigau

This school was visited approximately 3,5 walkinghours away from the current location in Gairigau. Under the leadership of Sir Nar Bahadur a team of 9 teachers are responsible for 80 students. This school was also highly impacted and partly destroyed by the earthquake. Lessons are taking place in the old and in a newly build room. After all the years still almost everything is lacking. The difficulty and therefore the challenge is the distance to the the main Highway. The Drawing Competition took place on the 4. of February and was a real festival day for the whole school. All were happy so what to say more...? During the competition we were practicing on Origamiworks together with lady-teachers and students. The first price for the girls had been sponsored by Aurelia Keuschnig (daughter of my sister Carmen) who was happy to see a very happy nepali-girl with her T-shirt. Another nine T-shirts (sponsored by Carmen) were handed over to needy students. Each student got a pencil-case with 1 pen, eraser and sharpener inside. 5 sopranflutes and 1 chime had been handed over. I was there again on the 19. of February and it was again a warm welcome. We were singing and dancing together. All teachers got warm woolen sandals sponsored by Carmen. Also Sir Nar Bdr was joining the first basic-music lesson given. More Jerseys could be handed over and details for future music-lessons were discussed, which will be held in the Tauthali school. 6. "Shree Nigale Secundary School", Nigale Bazar

This school is about 1,5 walkinghours from here. Headteacher Sir Bahadur Marka together with 11 teachers are responsible for 150 students, 15 in nursery classes. Material for the drawing-competition had been left there and games for breaking hours had been sponsored to the school. I returned there on the 11. of February to celebrate the giftdistribution to the winners of the drawing-competition. Unfortunately i had to find out that somebody of the teaching-team had decided to do this without waiting for me. This was crazy! So they distributed only 6 prices, although we had planned to have about 18 to 24 winners (some prices had been deposited on my first visit, some i had with me). At my first visit i gave them clear instructions, but.. After a short time of discussion i left this place... it was a very, very disappointing moment. Therefore also no music-lessons and any further actions will take place over there.

7. "Shree Surke Secondary School", Karidunga

This school is about 3,5 walkinghours from here, but i used the commodity to travel by bus. 2 weeks ago on a journey with friends up to the "Film-Village" above Karidunga we met Mr Durga Shrestha, so the contact to the school was given. Headteacher Sir Jaja Shrestha together with 21 teachers are responsible for 300 students, 20  in Nursery classes and 10 more in preschool class. Materials for the drawing-competition had been left there. For breaking times games had been sonsored to the school. The prices for the winners of the drawing competition had been handed over on the 7.of February.

One doll had been sponsored by Aurelia, my nice. It was a very festive cele-

bration and a lot of parents were present as well. I had been honored twice (school leading team and headmaster). 6 sopranflutes, 2 alto flutes together with three chimes had been handed over. The music-lessons started on the 12. of February. There i have the chance also to teach "Basic Music". When i get there some young ladies are taking me by hands and we are doing a round through the school complex before starting the lessons. On the 11.of March clothes sponsored by my sister Carmen and family Kristler was handed over. Thanks again for this sponsering. Flutestudents are: Ningmar Tamang, Nimesh Tamang, Pema Tamang, Saraj Tamang, Rubin Tamang, Karuna Tamang, Alisha Tamang and Srijana Khatri. On chimes: Salun Tamang, Aruna Tamang, Suswita Shrestha and Sabita Shrestha.

8. "Shree Janata Basic School", Jallala

This school definitely was the most difficult to reach. Very far away, about 5 walkinghours, and was surprised from a very warm welcome ceremony.  Headteacher Sir Surya Bohara together with 10 teachers is responsible for 100 students, 10 nursery childs included. For breaking times different games had been sponseres and markers for the school. Necessary material for the drawing-competition had been deposited.

I visited this school again on the 4. of March and the gift- +clothes  distribution took place. All clothes and some prices had been sponsored by Aurelia, my nice, Lorenz, my nephew and Ludwig, my godchild. The first price for the older ladies had been sponsored by Sparkasse Kufstein/Ebbs. I offered them  flute-lessons taking place at the 1,5 hours walking distance at Tauthali school but could not convince them, as it is too far away and the children would have to walk through the jungle. So i left there at least 2 chimes together with two of  my self made songbooks. With some ladyteachers for primary level we practiced different songs. Each student got an eraser and sharpener and all materials used for the drawing competition were sponsered to the school.

9. "Shree Tripurasundari Secundary School", Tauthali

Materials for the drawing-competition had been deposited. On the 24. of February we celecrated the gift-distribution to all winners of the drawing competition. Before i was honored and some children performed 2 well known songs specially form me by singing and dancing. (Resham Firiri and Leka ka hami) Of course i was joining with my flute and afterwards teachers were dancing also. It was a warm welcome and a very familiar celebration, also Sir Uttambhakt Shrestha was dancing and accompanying the songs on the dhamsa, a typical local drum. I handed over to the school 7 sopranflutes and 2 chimes thereafter the first flute lesson took place. Also 5 students from the Bagh Bhairab School  were present and will be taught there as well. In the breaking time i got served a nepali imbiss, derai mitho baiyo, thanks! For any further music-support, this school unfortunately is too far away (1,5 hours by bus). We also had little time to do some paperfolding (Origami) together with some ladyteachers and students. 3 prices (warm woolen sandals) had been sponsored by Carmen, my sister and several dolls by Lorenz, my nephew and Ludwig, my godchild.

Future Ideas..

There will be further projects taking place in future. The procedure, that somebody is living there for a while, might not be the same, but help will be enabled. We are also trying to find  volounteers. It is an interesting challenge for them and of course some financial help will be guaranteed. For the footballteam coaches are very welcome. The team wants to perform better in the championship next year. As mentioned earlier the name of our association was focusing on Nepal, but we will be there, where help is needed. That means we are spreading all over the world. We are also looking forward to cooperate with other associations, like it was this time. (ukalo de)

In autumn there will be a film-lecture about this Project and the"Fan-Mountains" (Tajikistan). Before starting this nepali project Harald Hasslacher was on the way in this wilderness for 29 days by rucksack. Beautiful untouched landscapes could be explored, 17 passes and quite a few of kilometers have been done. Above the  highest pass at about 4900m other mountaineerers were motivated on their climb by austrian folksongs played on the clarinet.

Also in autumn there will be another film-lecture about summitting Manaslu 8163m.Harald Hasslacher was joining an internatinal Manaslu-Trek and was able to reach the summit of the 8.highest mountain on the 27. of September 2019.

All these events will take place at the mountain lodge "Berghotel Hinterduxerhof". For the whole Nepal- challenge there were more people sponsoring me and passing over lucky charms to me. Pls look on above foto-collage, further details will follow during  the lecture.

Exact dates will follow.
